Silver shining wheel of radiance, radiance,
Mother, come to us.
Ancient queen of wisdom, Hecate, Hecate,
Old One, come to us.
– Triple Goddess Chant
One of Hecate's stories (as told by Lilith Maeve):
I was always a sucker for another weepy woman. Maybe I never had time to have a child myself, I was always too busy with my career. So when she came to me and cried on my shoulder and clawed at my hands to help her, how could I not?
I handed out flyers everywhere I could think she would go. The mall, the clubs, the local college. Everywhere. No one had so much as seen her. It was like a hole opened up from the ground and swallowed her up.
Sometimes, I heard the whisper of a rumor. Some boy . . .left on the back of a motorcycle . . . Well. Stranger things have happened. I knew if I kept at it, something would become clear. Secrets have a habit of unraveling if you’re patient enough to wait for it.
The mother knew I was good. She asked me to represent her to the court. I told her I would, pro bono. I still have a soft heart underneath this wrinkled skin. Sure enough, word gets out that the mother has called in the big guns and out of seemingly nowhere, suddenly the sordid come out. I helped negotiate the details and went to collect the daughter.
She seemed . . .darker than I remembered. More wistful. More sad.
To this day, I can’t figure out if it’s because she was kidnapped from her mother, or because I came to take her back.
